Edward Wedlake Brayley was an English antiquary and topographer, born in Lambeth, Surrey in 1773. Brayley is best remembered for his friendship and frequent collaboration with the English antiquary, author and editor John Britton. Britton and Brayley became joint editors of 'The Beauties of England and Wales', a series of books describing the topography and local history of England and Wales, and both men wrote numerous other topographical works. With a section on geology by the notable English obstetrician, geologist and palaeontologist Gideon Mantell. Copiously illustrated throughout with a frontispiece, numerous in text wood-engravings to each volume, and: Fifteen steel engravings to volume I, two of which are folding, and two of which are coloured. Lacking plate of 'Chapel and Hall in Ditto, Interiors&apos. 'Windlesham Church' has been bound as frontispiece. Sixteen steel engravings to volume II, one of which is folding, with 'Ruin at Virginia Water' bound as frontispiece. Nineteen steel engravings to volume III, one of which is folding, with 'The Duke of Buccleuch's Villa, Richmond' bound as frontispiece. Second edition, complete in four volumes bound in two (hardbacks). 4to (31cm by 26cm), vii, 391pp; v, 390pp; v, 392pp; vi, 396pp. 79 steel-engraved plates, including 3 coloured maps (correct as per lists), 75 wood-engraved text illustrations. Contemporary full brown morocco, gilt spines, gilt borders to the boards, all edges gilt. The bindings have been rebacked retaining the original spines, but the the addition of strips of leather to the joints (of a similar colour to the original binding). The bindings are a little rubbed. The contents are generally in very good condition, with some minor faults (creasing and foxing to the endpapers, tear to pp 179/180 in volume 2, stains to the margins of the three of the plates in volume 2). Overall, this set is in good condition.

Topographical Sketches of Brighthelmston and its Neighbourhood- Illustrated with Twelve Engravings by R. Havell Junr. London: T. Flook, [1825]. This copy specially bound and with the plates hand-colored, possibly at a later time, window-mounted and without the engraved title and text. First edition. Large quarto (12 x 8 1/2 inches; 305 x 216 mm.). Hand colored engraved vignette title and 12 hand colored plates by R. Havell, all marked 'proof' and window-mounted in stiff card (actual image size 5 3/4 x 3 3/8 inches; 146 x 86 mm.). Plate No. 1 has a tiny piece (1/4 x 1/4 inch) missing from lower left-hand blank corner (not affecting image); plate 8 has a small repaired 1 1/2 inch closed-tear on the left hand margin but not actually touching image. Some light foxing to blank margins. Contemporary Spanish red roan, covers decoratively bordered in gilt, surrounding an unidentified Spanish coat-of-arms stamped in gilt. Smooth spine decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Edges and corners a little worn. The superb plates are a wonderful depiction of Brighton and its neighborhood. Robert Havell, Jr. (1793-1878), was an American landscape painter and printmaker renowned for his work on John James Audubon’s four-volume The Birds of America (1827–1838), which includes 435 hand-colored plates. He grew up in Great Britain and honed his skills as an aquatint artist under the guidance of his father, an engraver. Despite his father's wishes for him to pursue a more academic career, Havell left home in 1825 and began working for a publishing firm. In 1827, Havell's father accepted the job of printing The Birds of America and enlisted his son to create the plates and handle much of the watercoloring. Havell’s meticulous work preserved both the scientific and artistic details of Audubon's original drawings, earning high praise from contemporaries. Edward Wedlake Brayley FSA (1773 -1854) was an English historian and topographer. Brayley collaborated with his life-long friend, John Britton, on the first 6 volumes of The Beauties of England and Wales. In 1838 he published Illustrations of Her Majesty's Palace at Brighton, formerly the Pavillion, executed by the command of George IV. The Plates: Vignette title 1.
